We watched my favourite comedy tonight, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, because Laura hadn’t seen it, and it’s just so great it’s made me want to kiss its ass here. It’s not often I see a movie I really love, and much less so a comedy, so this is one I really value and really want to make other people see. It’s just so consistently funny, and so varied in its humour; sight gags follow one-liners, which follow absurd moments, which follow closely-observed character stuff. John Hughes was really at his absolute peak, writing more great jokes for this film than all his others combined. There’re so many quotable lines that I nicked most of them and used them to pass myself off as funny before I discovered the joys of self-made-sarcasm. Since this film he’s mostly sucked, with a few Home Alone movies and some lame remakes, but God bless him for this! It’s an absolute gem, I wish it was held in higher regard. Steve Martin and John Candy make a great double-act, and it’s a shame they didn’t work together more. There’s a real warmth between them. And I’m so sad now; the ending always gets me. And it always gets me angry, too, because John Candy was so undervalued and so underused. He made too much crap, he deserves to be remembered as one of the greats. He’s so funny here, and so loveable. There are so many scenes when he looks like he really needs a hug. I remember when he died, there was just a little no-photo article in the paper. It’s such a shame. For Christ’s sakes, I came here to write something positive about a movie I love and I’ve made myself miserable thinking about John Candy! Just go watch it, piss yourselves laughing, then go feel sad for him. He really was great.
